Dr Inġ. Brian Azzopardi (BA) is the Founding Chair of The Foundation for Innovation and Research – Malta (FiR.mt), Senior Lecturer II at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST), Visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of Malta (UM) and Chief Consultant at Azzopardi & Associates. Since 2002, he has held senior academic, research and technical leadership positions across Malta, Lithuania and the United Kingdom while also contributing to industry, government agencies, ministries and research centers since 1998. He is the Coordinator and Principal Investigator of several UKRI, Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe initiatives including JUMP2Excel, NEEMO, TRANSIT, PROMISE and GIANTS, and has contributed directly to attracting over €10 million in competitive research funding to affiliated institutions within projects exceeding €30 million in total value over the past decade. His work focuses on smart energy systems, renewable energy integration, photovoltaics, electromobility, digitalisation of energy infrastructures, living laboratories, power systems, AI-enabled energy applications and sustainable innovation ecosystems. Dr Inġ. Azzopardi is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), member of Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Energy Institute (EI), the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and the Chamber of Engineers Malta. He served as General Chair of the IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2025, IET MEDPOWER 2022 and ISOS-10 '17 conferences hosted in Malta. He is the recipient of the 2020 MCST-JRC Young Scientist Award and the STEM Young Researchers Award. In 2025 he received his Electrical Engineering Warrant by the Government of Malta, followed by the Eur Ing qualification in 2008, Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Chartered Energy Engineer titles in 2012. He obtained a BEng (Hons.) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Malta in 2002 and a PhD from The University of Manchester in 2011. He also obtained teaching and pedagogical qualifications from MCAST and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) from Oxford Brookes University in 2012. Dr Inġ. Azzopardi is editor and co-author of books, chapters and more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications in journals and international conferences. He has served as invited speaker, scientific committee member, EU reviewer and QA expert, Chair and committee member of several Malta scholarships boards and reviewer across several international events, and has supervised several postgraduate researchers, doctoral candidates and postdoctoral fellows in interdisciplinary engineering and energy-related research fields.
